How to start exploring what you really want when considering career change – and a common pitfall
by Marjana | Mindset tips | Mar 2021
Today’s post is about how to start figuring out what you really want if you’re thinking about career change but aren’t sure where to start. I cover what I believe a common pitfall is, as well as where I think a better place to start is. (Click to watch the video, or scroll down if you’d prefer to read.)

Where people tend to start
One of the things I come across when I speak to people who feel unhappy at work, and are thinking about career change, is that they look at job options and listings in different fields and wonder what else they could do. Sometimes they’re already applying to things, but are feeling confused, overwhelmed, and disheartened.
I was the same when I first realised I wanted to change my career. I was looking at job posts and thinking about different careers, and wondering if something else might be a better fit. But doing that just made me feel more confused. I also felt like giving up sometimes.
Where I recommend starting instead
What I eventually realised was trying to figure out things this way didn’t work for me. And I think I was looking at things the wrong way round. Instead, I believe getting clear on what you really want, by thinking about what you need and value, and what you need from work to feel fulfilled, is a better way to approach this.
This is something we’re never really taught how to do. We’re not taught when we are younger how to think about work in the context of fulfilment or our own personal life goals.
In my case, the thing that really helped me was slowing down. Rather than looking for the next job or career, just stopping and really trying to get in tune with myself and what I really wanted. Taking things from there made it feel easier. It also meant I could move forwards with a lot more clarity.
Questions to help you get started
I encourage you to ask yourself these questions to help you get started with thinking about this:
- What do you feel is missing for you at work right now?
- What qualities would you really want in a job for it to feel fulfilling for you?
- If you imagine doing something for the rest of your working life, what would it need to have for it to feel exciting and meaningful to you?
- How would you really like to feel day to day?
To sum up
When you’re considering a career change, rather than immediately searching for what to do instead, or looking at job options, I believe it’s worth taking stock and exploring and getting clear on what you really want and need from work to feel fulfilled.
