Do you know yourself as well as you think you do?

by Marjana | Mindset tips | Apr 2021

In today’s post, I talk about how questioning what you think you know about yourself can lead to amazing experiences – and what a musical theatre class taught me about living more fully. (Click to watch the video, or scroll down if you’d prefer to read.)

What I learned from a musical theatre class I was convinced I would hate

I’ve always loved taking classes and learning new things as an adult. A couple of years ago, I went to a taster for a musical theatre beginners course. I only went because it made sense timing-wise with another class I wanted to try. Plus, I was trying to do new things outside of my comfort zone. But, I was convinced it would be terrible and that I wouldn’t enjoy it at all. The idea of performing in front of other people seemed terrifying. I was too awkward and shy, I would look stupid. It just wasn’t for me.

Then I went to the taster class, and it was brilliant! I had so much fun. It didn’t matter how I looked or sounded – we were all beginners and it was just fun. I ended up signing up for a three-month beginners course and had such a great time. Even though I was really nervous, at the end of it all, I just felt so good about it, and it was a brilliant experience overall.

How what we think we know about ourselves gets in the way sometimes

The whole thing made me think about how if I’d given in to who I thought I was, or what I thought I could or couldn’t do, or even what I thought I liked or didn’t like when I was thinking about that taster class, I never would have had the opportunity to realise how much I loved it. And I would have missed the whole experience too.

It made me think about how we all have things we believe about ourselves, and who we are, that can get in the way of us trying and experiencing things sometimes.

I’m the same, and when I coach people, I see this all the time too. It’s human nature to avoid things outside our comfort zones – especially when we think we’re not good at something.

Have you ever done this yourself?

Can you think of times you’ve said no to something just because it’s not you, or you’re convinced you won’t like it or won’t be good at it? And on the other side, can you think of a time you wanted to say no to something but did it anyway, and had an amazing experience?

These days, I try to notice and not just give in to what I automatically think I can and can’t do, or will or won’t enjoy. I just try to catch myself when I think about something along the lines of, ‘that’s not for me’, or, ‘I would hate that’ – and I try to question it.

Questions you can ask yourself next time

I encourage you to try asking yourself these questions the next time you find yourself feeling similarly:

  • How much is this something I really  know I can’t do, or would be bad at, or wouldn’t like?

  • What parts of me, if any, feel scared or uncomfortable?

  • What possibility is there that I’ll enjoy or like it?

To sum up

I believe that sometimes the way we think about what we like, or what we can or can’t do, can hold us back from experiencing something we’ll really love or enjoy. That’s why I feel it’s worth trying to notice these things, and rather than just giving in to our default reactions, questioning them a bit.

If what I talked about today resonated, I’d love to hear your comments and what your takeaway is!
